My name is Marcus Junius Brutus, but I’m commonly known as Brutus. Although that was my real name, I was adopted by my uncle and was referred to as Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus. However, I eventually returned to using my original name because I liked it better.
I was a politician of the Roman Republic. When the civil war broke out in 49 BC between Pompey and Caesar, I sided with Pompey and became the leader of the Optimates. I betrayed Caesar who then ordered his soldiers to capture me as a prisoner if I gave myself up.
After the war, I wrote to Caesar and apologized for my traitorous action. Caesar, being the trusting friend he was, accepted my apology and made me the governor of the city Gaul. He also accepted me in his inner circle and his best friend. l. About 3 years later in June 45 BC I had divorced my wife and married my first cousin Portia Catonis who was Cato’s daughter.
This marriage was considered scandalous because I did not give a reason for wanting to divorce my wife. I just really wanted to marry Portia. This made my mother angry because she hated the attention and love I gave to Portia.
